Surgical Technician Schools & Education

Surgical techs are health professionals that assist surgeons during operations. Even though surgeons get all the credit for the performed surgery, the role of the surgical technicians must not be undervalued.

How to Find the Right School

For many people, the job market is looking grim. While many industries are slashing budgets and cutting jobs, health services is still a relatively stable, if not growing, field. With the population aging, qualified allied health professionals have a better job outlook today than they did just a few years ago. Now is the time to find the right surgical technician school and pursue a new career.

Students often have difficulty finding programs that will work around their busy schedules. In recent years, many colleges and universities have begun to offer online programs which allow students to take classes on their own time and sometimes even at their own pace. Online coursework follows the same curriculum that students would typically receive in the classroom. In addition, many schools have academic departments dedicated to helping adult students succeed.

Surgical Tech Education Requirements

There are several educational paths one can choose from when pursuing surgical technician training. Most of these programs require that the applicant has a high school diploma or an equivalent. Also, it certainly is recommended that the candidate has a good knowledge of basic math and science.

One can decide to obtain a degree in Human Services of Medical Assisting, by completing a two-year long program, or choose from the surgical tech schools that offer programs in duration of usually 20 months. The usual curriculum in the degree programs are usually more general and include subjects such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, aseptic techniques, surgical procedures, medical terminology, sterilization techniques, care for patients, equipment handling etc. Some programs also include training for critical thinking and working under pressure, since these skills are crucial for a surgical technologist. However, the surgery tech schools must not be underestimated either, because they also provide strong preparation for their students, train them for the job and sharpen their skills.

Employers prefer educated and qualified surgical technicians, so one should be very thorough with his/her studies, but should also pay attention when choosing a surgical tech school. First of all, of course, one has to be sure to choose a school that will be suitable for him/her in terms of both location and tuition fee. Also one should consider that some of the more renowned schools offer scholarships and other types of financial aid. It is also recommendable to choose a surgical tech school that offers the possibility for internships in hospitals, because this is a great opportunity to practically implement the theoretical knowledge and get more acquainted to the job, but could also offer an opportunity for employment, since hospitals often hire their interns after the internship completion.

At least, the internship program will enrich your resume and make you stand out from the rest. However, one has to have in mind that, when choosing from the surgical technology schools, the most important criterion should be whether the school is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Obtaining a diploma from an accredited school makes one eligible for the national certification exam. Passing this exam is the highest credential.

Surgical Tech Certification

There are two national certification examinations for surgical technologists. The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) offers the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination. This exam is a test taken on a computer, consisted of multiple-choice questions. This exam must be retaken every four years in order to renew the certification. The National Centre for Competency Testing (NCCT) offers an examination that, once passed, provides one with the title of Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C). This certification should be renewed every five years. The renewal of both, the CST and the TS-C certification requires that one takes further classes in order to keep up with the development in the field and the newest trends.

Education is essential for becoming a competent surgical tech. Proper training combined with experience will turn one into a qualified professional with many possibilities for career development.
